Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

For the first time, trusted and beloved cookbook author Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, answers the number one question she receives from cooks: Can I make it ahead?

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in front of the stove at your own party, scrambling to get everything to the table at just the right moment, Ina is here to let you in on her secrets! Thanks to twenty years of running a specialty food store and fifteen years writing cookbooks, she has learned exactly which dishes you can prep, assemble, or cook ahead of time。 Whether you’re hosting a party or simply making dinner on a hectic weeknight, Ina gives you lots of amazing recipes that taste just as good—or even better!—when they’re made in advance。

In Make It Ahead, each recipe includes clear instructions for what you can do ahead of time, and how far in advance, so you can cook with confidence and eliminate last-minute surprises。 Make a pitcher of Summer Rosé Sangria filled with red berries, let it chill overnight for the flavors to develop, and you have a delicious drink to offer your friends the minute they arrive。 Simmer a pot of Wild Mushroom & Farro Soup, enjoy a bowl for lunch, and freeze the rest for a chilly evening。 You can prep the kale, Brussels sprouts, and lemon vinaigrette for Winter Slaw ahead of time and simply toss them together before serving。 Assemble French Chicken Pot Pies filled with artichokes and fresh tarragon a day in advance and then pop them in the oven half an hour before dinner。 And for dessert, everyone needs the recipe for Ina’s Decadent (gluten-free!) Chocolate Cake topped with Make-Ahead Whipped Cream。 Ina also includes recipes for the biggest cooking day of the year—Thanksgiving! Her Ultimate Make-Ahead Roast Turkey and Gravy with Onions & Sage may just change your life。

With beautiful photographs and hundreds of invaluable make-ahead tips, this is your new go-to guide for preparing meals that are stress-free yet filled with those fabulously satisfying flavors that you have come to expect from the Barefoot Contessa。

I saved six of the recipes。 Good thing it was a library book。 The photos were gorgeous, though。

Like all of Garten's other books, this was full of wonderful recipes that I can't wait to try out。 What sets this one apart--as the title implies--is that she includes information for how to make each recipe ahead of time。 This is ideal for people planning a dinner party or those simply planning for the week ahead。 Like all of Garten's other books, this was full of wonderful recipes that I can't wait to try out。 What sets this one apart--as the title implies--is that she includes information for how to make each recipe ahead of time。 This is ideal for people planning a dinner party or those simply planning for the week ahead。 。。。more

returned to library, I like her style。

I enjoy reading Ina's essays and tips。 Every one of her cookbooks has her incredible recipe for chicken broth (she makes it with three chickens。 I cut the ingredients by 2/3's and only use one bird。 I'm just one of me - I can't imagine needing so much broth。) I enjoy reading Ina's essays and tips。 Every one of her cookbooks has her incredible recipe for chicken broth (she makes it with three chickens。 I cut the ingredients by 2/3's and only use one bird。 I'm just one of me - I can't imagine needing so much broth。) 。。。more

Although this cookbook focuses on dishes to "make ahead", it is very useful for those cooking Just In Time as well。 Quite a deliciously wide selection。 Although this cookbook focuses on dishes to "make ahead", it is very useful for those cooking Just In Time as well。 Quite a deliciously wide selection。 。。。more

So many flagged pages, it will probably take me all of 2021 to try all of the recipes that I want to!

I really like the idea of being able to make parts of a recipe ahead of time so that you can simplify the actual cooking process。 I’m not so great at multitasking while I have a bunch of dishes on the stove so I think this might actually be my favorite Ina book yet!I’ll keep you updated as I try some of her delicious recipes。

Sarah

Hands down my favorite Ina cookbook。

For people who can't do everything in one day -- although it would still take much more energy than it is easy to put out here at the end of the summer -- this is a winter book。 For people who can't do everything in one day -- although it would still take much more energy than it is easy to put out here at the end of the summer -- this is a winter book。 。。。more

This cookbook has lots of colored pics so you can see the finished dish。 I was hoping for more recipes or information on how to freeze dishes for later。 There are some freezing tips but this is more about making dishes a day in advance and having them ready to go (which is still a good idea)。 I don’t have all the ingredients for the recipes I want to try in our self quarantine right now but for those I do, I think I will try them out。

Ina Garten really inspires me to cook! The recipes in this book look doable, and the photos are bright and colorful。 I love that this cookbook centers around tips for prepping and cooking ahead。 Well done!

Run! Preheat your oven。 Whip up the Tres Leches Cake with Berries。 Serve to your guests and bask in their accolades。 The cake is even better the 2nd or 3rd day, if there’s any left。 If you don’t have any of Ina’s cookbooks, these are some of her solid and easy recipes, all good to prepare in advance of company’s arrival。

I love this cookbook! The idea that all of these recipes have a make a head component makes a busy cooks life easier。 Ina's recipes are always delicious and I have tried a few already。 Her directions are concise and clear and there are always beautiful photos to help you。 Well Done。 I love this cookbook! Beautiful and clear layout。 The best I’ve seen in a recipe book! The food in here is delicious。 Made Cauliflower snowflakes, baked barley (couldn’t find farro) & butternut squash and stuffed zucchini for a family meal and everyone left very satisfied and very impressed!

Anne

Interesting ideas and some good tips。

Love Ina, love her recipes, love her taste in ingredients! Make ahead recipes fill the pages, perfect for people who entertain often and don’t want to rush prior to guest arrival。

I’ve had this cookbook sitting on my shelf lovingly stored beside my other Ina cookbooks。 I finally sat down today and read it cover to cover。 I read each story, anecdote, and tip。 It is everything I love about Ina’s books and shows。 She is unpretentious yet sophisticated, approachable yet elegant。 I truly believe we would be fabulous dinner party friends。

This is a pretty good cookbook。 I tend to love cookbooks from different places by people from those places, filled with stories。 This isn't that type but the little stories inside still made me smile。 And I like that it's all about making things easy and prepping ahead but the dishes are still creative and not just basic Crockpot meals。 Some of the meals were not my thing but there are so many I can't wait to try! I'm hard on cookbooks。 If I don't think I'll cook from them with reasonable regularity or don't learn something new from them, they pretty much get the two-star "It's OK。" That applies here。 It's OK。 It's just very basic, so I didn't learn anything new, and it didn't have any recipes that made me want to get up and cook。 Most of the recipes are so simple that you don't really need a recipe for them。 Marinated feta cheese is delicious, but I don't need step-by-step instructions to do it。 Ditto ba I'm hard on cookbooks。 If I don't think I'll cook from them with reasonable regularity or don't learn something new from them, they pretty much get the two-star "It's OK。" That applies here。 It's OK。 It's just very basic, so I didn't learn anything new, and it didn't have any recipes that made me want to get up and cook。 Most of the recipes are so simple that you don't really need a recipe for them。 Marinated feta cheese is delicious, but I don't need step-by-step instructions to do it。 Ditto basic salads。 Probably a good book for a novice cook, one who needs a lot of hand-holding, and especially one who has the means and access to upscale groceries for ingredients。 Also probably will be liked by those who like "chatty" cookbooks where the author talks incessantly about their spouse or home。 I burned out on the whole "all about me" style of cookbooks ages ago。 。。。more

Gorgeous pictures and her recipes feel really approachable。

While the book had tips on how you can make it ahead, these recipes are still a little too complicated for my style。 I don’t even have time to make it ahead right now so simplicity is a must。 The dessert part had a few that look yummy to try。

Great book to read or for reference if you want to know how to prepare for dinner parties ahead of time。 The recipes are good and simple。 The desserts looked very yummy and tasty。 I enjoyed looking at those images。 I'm not a baker so I will not try to make any of the desserts, however, I will make the cocktails。 I imagined if Ina baked desserts for me like she does for Jeffrey, I'd be in heaven too。 Great book to read or for reference if you want to know how to prepare for dinner parties ahead of time。 The recipes are good and simple。 The desserts looked very yummy and tasty。 I enjoyed looking at those images。 I'm not a baker so I will not try to make any of the desserts, however, I will make the cocktails。 I imagined if Ina baked desserts for me like she does for Jeffrey, I'd be in heaven too。 。。。more

I would make every recipeIna has done it again! She has managed to put together a great cookbook with accessible ingredients, lovely photos and dollops of warming stories (her story about Lee Bailey was charming)。 I would be happy to make any of these recipes and know that family and guests alike would enjoy them。

This was around 3。5 stars for me。I love Ina Garten and this is a pretty standard Barefoot Contessa book。 But I do appreciate that there are tips in the beginning about cooking or baking in advance and things to keep in mind when you're hosting and trying to prep things ahead of time。 Though some of the tips are common sense I'll admit I hadn't thought of some。The recipes themselves look decent and seem doable and each has information on how far in advance you can prep and how you should store th This was around 3。5 stars for me。I love Ina Garten and this is a pretty standard Barefoot Contessa book。 But I do appreciate that there are tips in the beginning about cooking or baking in advance and things to keep in mind when you're hosting and trying to prep things ahead of time。 Though some of the tips are common sense I'll admit I hadn't thought of some。The recipes themselves look decent and seem doable and each has information on how far in advance you can prep and how you should store them to keep everything fresh。 。。。more

I loved this book。 Of all the barefoot contessa books I have read this was my favorite。 This is a refuge in a ugly time。 The recipes were so delicious and I loved the beautiful pics and thought a lot about not throwing everything in the freezer but leaving it in the fridge to make instead。
